Dogma

I played this to my band Thumper and Smash, and told them that they each needed to come up with a verse of their own.  Thumper wrote the second verse (Coffee/Whiskey).  Smash wrote the political verse (Right Wingers/Commies), but I modified it to make it more offensive.  And this is it.

I don’t remember doing this recording, but it’s different from the way I usually play it.  Normally I’ll play a verse in the octave you hear in this recording, then I repeat the verse an octave higher.  But, you get what you pay for.

By the way, neither Thumper nor Smash bears any responsibility for this recording.  I did it by myself.

Oh, and Larry is a friend, owner of Larryland Music, and host of a monthly public jam session called “Pickin’ on the Porch”.

Punk Rock

One of my FAWM songs from this year

©2014 Stephen G Brown

I wish I could play with a punk rock band

We’d play real loud, we’d play hard and
We’d wear Leather jackets, jeans all full of rips
Green haired mohawks and jewelry in our lips

I’d wear my big ol’ combat boots, don’t know where they’re from
Chains make me look tough, gotta get me some
“A” stands for Anarchy, don’t know what it means
But I yell it just as loud as I can possibly scream

Singing
Na na na na hey hey hey
I don’t hear a word you say
Singing
Na na na na oh oh oh
Won’t be long until we go

We’d act real tough, we’d act real cool
We’d sneer a whole lot, hope that we scare you
Stand around before the show, looking disaffected
Covers for the fact that we feel like we’re rejected

Standing on the stage, bouncing around
maybe smash some stuff, liven up the crowd
Stand at the edge let me sweat drip on the fan
Take a flying leap, this is punk rock, man!

Singing
Na na na na hey hey hey
I don’t hear a word you say
Singing
Na na na na oh oh oh
Won’t be long until we go

Solo

Singing
Na na na na hey hey hey
I don’t hear a word you say
Singing
Na na na na oh oh oh
Won’t be long until we go

Just wrote another song, uses all three chords
Changing up the rhythm so we won’t get board
Scratch that, we’ll just play the same thing
It’s not like Kiri Te Kenawa gonna get up and sing

We don’t need to be good, we can just play loud
We don’t give a rats, we just act proud
I don’t love nothin’, you got nothin’ that I need
I’m too damn lazy to rage against the machine

Singing
Na na na na hey hey hey
I don’t hear a word you say
Singing
Na na na na oh oh oh
Won’t be long until we go

Vicious

Just one of those things that comes to me from time to time.

I knew that you had done the deed when I first saw your face
I knew that either you or I would die before we left that place
My brother was a happy man, and never meant no harm
But trouble always lead him, and he’d just tag along

Mmm, mmm, mmm

He’d always laughed at danger, he never showed no fear
I bet that he laughed at you when you stuck that pistol in his ear
He knew he had it coming, he didn’t want to go
I bet he told you to be ready when his brother showed

Mmm, mmm, mmm

Well I’m his younger brother, my demeanor’s not so light
I’ve got a pistol in my left hand and another in my right
The Lord has claimed that vengeance belongs to only him
But he uses men like me to mete out the payment cold and grim

No there is nothing pretty about the way you cry
Begging for just one more day, cause you don’t want to die
Every man is mortal, now listen up, my friend
You cut down my big brother, it’s time you meet your end

Mmm, mmm, mmm

Any man who lifts his hand to strike another down
Should have is soul prepared to see his body six feet in the ground
I sleep with one eye open, but I know the day will be
When I come against a man with hands that draw faster than me

Mmm, mmm, mmm

I knew that you had done the deed when I first saw your face
I knew that either you would die before we left that place
My brother was a happy man, and never meant no harm
But trouble always lead him, and he’d just tag along

Psalm 1

©2014 Stephen G Brown

This was written as a “first fruits” offering for a songwriting group I participate in.  I have an alternate section for the section beginning “He will be like a tree”, but I haven’t recorded that version yet.

Psalm 1

D
How blessed is the man who does not walk
C
In the counsel of the wicked,
G                    D
Nor stand in the path of sinners,
C
Nor sit in the seat
G                           D
Lord like I do, the seat of scoffers!

D
Blessed the man whose delight is
C
In the law of the Lord,
G                 D
And in His law he meditates  (both night and day)

D
He will be like a tree planted by the water
G
A tree that gives good fruit when it’s time comes
D
All its leaves stay green, you will not see them wither;
G
And all his does, finds victory.

D
The wicked, my Lord, they are not so,
C
They are lost like the chaff
G                              D
Lost like the chaff and blown away.

D
The wicked will not stand in the judgment,
C
And sinners have no place among
G                       D
Among your righteous assembly

D
For the Lord knows the way of the righteous,
C
But the ways of the wicked
G                       D
The ways of the wicked will perish
